The Old Rules Are Gone

My Mum and Dad are here to hang with us in Bali for a couple of weeks.

As per usual our conversation regularly turns to business.

My Dad is a lifelong entrepreneur.

From recruitment in Wellington to carparks in Auckland and finally music shops which he sold a few years ago.

And when he looks at our business he is amazed.

Not just by what we do or have done.

But what opportunities are available to us.

When he bought the business he would eventually sell, everything was different.

A new store would need $400k to start up and a 10 year lease commitment.

His advertising was hit and hope via the radio and paper.

His stock would take 4 months to arrive.

And competition was cut throat with every business owner playing their cards close to their chest.

The level of risk and uncertainty was massive.

After a few years out of the game he looks at the current landscape with envy and wonder.

You can start a business with just an internet connection and an idea.

You can target your specific customer anywhere in the world for a few bucks.

You can get directly mentored by other millionaire entrepreneurs for a few thousand dollars.

Yet many still watch on.

The party has been in full swing and they’ve been invited multiple times but they choose to play by the old rules.

Not everyone in my Dad’s generation get it.

Actually, most don’t.

I speak to entrepreneurs everyday trapped inside the family business trying to live up to rules that are past their used by date. Driving with the handbrake on is difficult and dangerous.

I am blessed to have this perspective in my life.
