She left the house at 6.30am. That meant she had to be up before 6.
The first train took 40 minutes. The underground was an hour. Then there was a 15 minute walk.
On a good day it took 2 hours.
One way.
I stayed at home getting my business off the ground and Michelle travelled 4 hours a day to consult to a council.
That was our life.
In the evenings we would exhaustedly eat dinner together with a little too much wine. We would talk about what we wanted – a business that could could support both of us so we could work when and where we wanted to.
But I had a secret.
It was something I wasn’t even consciously aware of.
I didn’t want her there.
I kind of liked rolling out of bed a little after 7 and putting my best trackies on to flop in front of the computer and do my internet thing. I could play music, watch the odd youtube video, have a quick (hmm) game of xbox at lunchtime.
Self employment baby. I’ve earned this.
But I hadn’t.
I was playing at business.
We were slowly racking up the credit cards and using them to buy happiness.
While I was gaining skills I wasn’t moving anything forward.
For me.
For us.
I was a liar.
Life came along and punched me in the nose and forced me to wake up.
My business fell apart and we found out we were pregnant.
Sh*t got real.
We got real.
About what we wanted.
Together.
Synergism is the interaction of two things that produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.
Two people together moving in the same direction are much more powerful than two people moving on separate tracks.
This doesn’t mean you have ‘work’ together but you have to work together.
If you are pulling in opposite directions then it’s really hard to move forward.
Pull together.
Push together.
It’s the only way.
