Aron Ralston was an experienced outdoorsman when he went hiking in Utah.
He was canyoneering in a remote location when a boulder dislodged and trapped his hand.
Unable to free himself he decided to cut off his own hand.
His story was turned into a film with James Franco (thankfully its not 127 hours long)
Ralston told a film blog in 2010 that it was a vision of his future son that saved his life and helped him decide to cut off his own appendage and survive the ordeal.
Ralston guy was stuck in a life or death situation.
He didn’t have a surgeon on hand so he had do it himself. The pain and agony of performing surgery on himself and not even knowing whether he would survive afterwards or bleed out.
