Yesterday I went on a school trip.
My 5 year old son and 36 other little people escorted by 7 adults. Me and 6 Mums. As predicted I was the only Dad. Apparently Dads are less likely to take time off work for school trips despite the fact that most of the Mums took time off work for a school trip….
I digress.
We looked at animals.
Bunnies, sheep, goats, birds, butterflies and an 800kg crocodile called Scar.
Scar is a badass.
He’s called Scar because in the middle of the night he tore down an iron fence to kill a rival croc who was competing for his ladies attention. During this badassery he got a scar on his nose.
Did you know that crocs usually eat once or twice a year?
The rest of the time they just chill out in the sun knowing they are the biggest, baddest dudes around and very little can hurt them.
The keeper was telling us he will never be trained and he could be with him for 50 years and if he slips one day he will get eaten.
If Scar ran a business he wouldn’t give a toss about the competition.
He wouldn’t give a toss about ‘the economy’.
He wouldn’t give a toss that a competitor was copying his ideas.
Because he’s an apex predator. As long as he eats a couple of times a year he’s going to live for a long, long time.
And you need to have the same attitude.
External factors just happen.
Competitors compete, economies have cycles and seasons change.
If you want to be an apex predator you need to focus on your own business; the things you can effect. You will still be there in 50 years and broken through a fence or two to kill your competition.
Be an apex predator of business.
Be like Scar.
